Alexander Boyd Williams (born: 15 January 1983) is a Scottish striker who joined Dundalk from Ayr United in the July transfer window this year. Williams has spent the majority of his career to date in Scotland with his only spell outside his native country coming three years ago when he spent time in Australia. The 5ft11 front man started out at Stirling Albion in the late nineties where he caught the eye with 21 goals in 61 appearances over a three-year period. Linked with moves to English Premiership clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic, Williams instead arrived at Greenock Morton for a fee of £50,000 in 2002. There, he scored 39 goals in 82 outings before, three years later, going on-loan to Queen of the South. After a short time there, in 2005, Williams transferred permanently to Clyde and made an instant impact as he scored just three minutes into his debut against Brechin City in the Scottish Challenge Cup. He went on to finish that season as the club’s top scorer with 13 goals and the following January he started for Clyde in their famous Scottish Cup win over Celtic, who featured Roy Keane in their lineup. However, Williams left Broadwood Stadium and moved to Australia in the summer of 2006 when he joined Armdale, who ply their trade in the Western Australian Premier League. After scoring six goals in six games he went on trial to A-League club Perth Glory but it was unsuccessful and he was soon back in Scotland with Ross County.
He endured an injury-disrupted time there, though, and he returned to Clyde, at the time managed by Joe Miller, in January 2007 after impressing in a number of trial games. However, after just one goal in 11 eleven outings, he was on the move again five months later as his contract was not renewed, but he found a new club within weeks as he signed for Ayr in July 2007. He proved a huge hit at Somerset Park, scoring 16 league goals in 34 games during the 2007/08 season, including a wonderful double strike at Raith Rovers. It was last season when Williams ensured his place in the club’s history books, though, when he scored a last-gasp equaliser against local rivals Kilmarnock to earn a replay and a much-needed cash boost. He also caught the headlines for his goal celebration as he hugged and then kissed the referee. It was his last meaningful contribution for the club and, on 8 June last, after netting seven league goals in 33 outings, his contract was terminated by mutual consent, opening the way for his move to Dundalk. He made his first appearance in front of the Oriel Park faithful in a friendly organised by Sean Connor for trialists against Lisburn on 16 June and scored in the first minute in an easy 3-0 win for the Lilywhites, impressing the manager enough to ensure a deal was offered which will see him remain at the border venue until the end of the season at least. He made and scored on his competitive debut against Derry City at Oriel Park on 3 July.
