Joe Miller (born: 8 December 1967) is a former Aberdeen and Celtic winger/striker and an ex-manager of Clyde who became assistant manager to Sean Connor at Dundalk in January 2009. During a 22-year playing career, Joe lined out for seven different clubs, with his only spell outside Scotland coming in Australia when he signed for Parramatta Power (2000) and later North Sydney (2003). He began his career at Aberdeen, breaking into the first team towards the end of the 1984/85 season, and made 59 appearances, scoring 13 goals, over the subsequent three years, before joining Celtic in 1987.
In his first season with the Glasgow giants, Joe, a native of the city, scored on his debut in a 5-0 rout of Dundee in November ‘87, before going on to win the League & Cup double. The following year, Celtic retained the cup and this time it was Miller who proved the hero as his goal was enough to beat bitter rivals Rangers 1-0 in the decider. That, incidentally, was the last time that Celtic defeated their Old Firm rivals in a cup final until March of this year. After four more seasons with the Hoops, Joe returned to Aberdeen in 1993/94 where he remained for five years, making 149 appearances and scoring 19 goals in the process.
After winning a Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup in his overall time at Pittodrie, Joe finally ended his time at the club when joining Dundee United ahead of the 1998/99 season. He then moved to Parramatta Power in 2000. After nine goals in 24 outings, Miller departed after just one season and returned to Scotland where he had short stints at both Raith Rovers and Clydebank. He then went back to Australia and signed for North Sydney, who he helped to a KDSA Grand Final victory.
Miller joined Clyde in June 2005 as assistant manager to Graham Roberts but continued to combine playing with that role. He scored twice in 15 appearances in what was to prove to be his last ever campaign as a player, as he took over as manager of the club in 2006. During that year, Miller took Clyde to the Challenge Cup final, the club’s first national final in almost 40 years. In May 2007, however, Joe rejected a new contract offer from the club and left. He was not seen again in football until last January when he decided to take up Connor’s offer to join the coaching staff at Oriel Park for Dundalk’s return to the Premier Division for the first time since 2002.
