Gerry Scully (born: 29 November 1978) is an ex-Dundalk midfielder who returned to the club as assistant manager upon John Gill’s arrival as boss in November 2005. Scully had previously played with Gill as the pair won two First Division winners medals with Drogheda United, while they also worked together for a short spell at Athlone Town after Gill took up the hotseat at Saint Mel’s Park in mid-2005 following the departure of Stephen Kelly. At the end of that season, Scully accompanied Gill to Oriel Park, where the duo have enjoyed good success.
In their first season at the helm, Dundalk went on a magnificent sequence of twenty matches unbeaten, however, despite winning a ‘Promotion/Relegation Playoff’ over two legs against Waterford United, the Lilywhites were denied their rightful place in the Premier Division due to the infamous IAG decision. Despite that, Gill and Scully remained for 2007 and guided the team on another wonderful run, as they equalled a club record by going fourteen matches undefeated at the beginning of the league campaign, that form eventually being ended by Cobh Ramblers in a 1-0 loss on the South coast on 24 June.
As an injury-crisis engulfed the squad, Dundalk struggled to cope, and they eventually had to settle for a third place finish behind champions Cobh, having led the table until the 22nd game of the season. Despite finishing ten points behind their opponents, the Louth club were rewarded with a one-off playoff semi-final with Finn Harps, however, they lost out in a 2-0 defeat in Ballybofey. Following the departure of twelve players and the arrival of nine new ones in the close-season, Gill and Scully have set out to make 2008 third time lucky in their quest for promotion.
As a player, during his League of Ireland career, the technically gifted Scully played for both Dundalk and Drogheda United. A short stint at Oriel Park came in the 1983/84 season when he made six appearances for the Lilywhites in a squad which contained greats such as Tommy McConville, Richie Blackmore and Martin Lawlor. A more successful spell was to await on Boyneside for Scully, however, as, along with Gill, the Dubliner helped Drogheda to two First Division titles in 1989 and 1991, with the sour taste of relegation mixed in between. He also won a First Division Shield with the Drogs in 1991.
