Shane Grimes (born: 9 March 1987) is a local left-back who was first called up to the senior panel by Jim Gannon in April 2005 having impressed in the club’s underage teams. He was on the bench for the win over Limerick in United Park (during Oriel Park’s makeover), and finally made his first senior appearance as a second-half substitute in June 2005 in the 3-0 defeat to Galway United at Gortakeegan. In August 2005, Shane made the starting line-up for the very first time against Drogheda United in the televised FAI Cup meeting in Oriel Park, on the Lilywhites’ new artificial pitch. And it was to get even better for Grimes later in the season when he scored a terrific free-kick in the 2-2 draw with Athlone Town in September, his only goal during 17 appearances under Gannon.
 
John Gill decided to keep Shane in his plans at the beginning of 2006 but the manager relied more upon experienced players rather than looking to youth. As a result, Shane's opportunities were limited with only one start - in the 1-0 defeat to Kildare County in March - to his name for the whole season. 2007 was kinder to Shane, as with an injury crisis came his chance to impress - one which he took, as he made 16 league appearances during the year. Signed on again for 2008, Grimes again battles with David Crawley for the left-back slot, however, opportunities for the youngster may again only arise out of injury or suspension.
