Game By Game

August 21st 1932 // Bray Unknowns 1-1 Dundalk // League

A fair result on the opening day of the season in the Carlisle Grounds. Dundalk took the lead after 20 minutes with a close range goal from Smith after being set free by Faloon. Hogan equalised for Bray in the 44th minute. Dundalk’ best performers were Mitchell and Smith upfront while Patton was a constant thorn in the side of the Bray defence. Nelson and McDiarmuid were solid at the back throughout.

Bray Unknowns: Frame, J Rigby, Redmond, Howard, Hutchinson, Byrne, Comerford, Neary, A Rigby, Hogan, Hannon.

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Patton, Faloon, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

August 28th 1932 // Dolphin 0-2 Dundalk // League

Dundalk strolled to victory in Harold’s Cross after completely outplaying their opponents. Only a superb performance by Power in the Dolphin goal kept the scoreline respectable. Lewis was not tested in goal while the rest of the Dundalk team performed much better than in Bray seven days previously. Patton was moved to centre-half and was exceptional. Carroll, a former Dolphin player, was moved from centre-forward to inside-right and was Dundalk’s other star performer. The first goal had an element of good fortune about it. A long pass by Patton sent Carroll clear away on the right. Power and Smith challenged for the ball with both missing it and the ball entered the net. The second goal came on the stroke of half-time when McMahon scored with a low drive.

Dolphin: Power, Lennox, Doyle, Bermingham, Moore, Ryan, Kelly, Somers, Foley, Reid, Fallon

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Johnston, Patton, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

4th September 1932 // Dundalk 3-0 Shelbourne // League

A fantastic performance by Dundalk at the Athletic Grounds. Dundalk took the lead after just 4 minutes when Johnston crossed for McMahon to head the ball down past Bilcliff. Smith added a second after 15 minutes when he took a pas from Patton and driblled through the Shelbourne defence and shot past the advancing Bilcliff. Dundalk wrapped up the points after 30 minutes when Smith shot home following a cross by Carroll. Shelbourne’s best moment came when Tony Carroll beat Lewis but his shot hit the crossbar.
In the week following the match Patton earned the praise of the national media. “A man who must be watched for representative matches. He has stamina, resource, and supports his forwards very well”.

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Johnston, Patton, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

Shelbourne: Bilcliff, Astly, Byrne, Wilson, Maloney, Homes, Carroll, McConnell, Diamond, Wannacott, Weston.

11th September 1932 // Drumcondra 1-3 Dundalk // League

Dundalk’s fine start continued in Tolka Park with this convincing victory. Drums took the lead through Murray. McMahon, a penalty from Patton and McCourt gave Dundalk the victory. Dundalk were stronger and faster throughout. Half-backs Hirst and Patton were exceptional with Mitchell also turning in a good display.

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Johnston, Patton, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

17th September 1932 // Dundalk 1-0 Cork //
League

Dundalk moved three points clear following this narrow win over Cork in the Athletic Grounds. The were made to wait until the 88th minute before grabbing the all-important goal after a game where both defences were on top. The crowd were beginning their departure from the ground when a brilliant run by Carroll ended with Smith heading past Foley. Both sides missed chances in the 1st half. Mitchell was Dundalk’s best forward throughout. Foley denied Carroll in the last minute with a point blank save.

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Johnston, Patton, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

Cork: Foley, Lennon, Burke, Lappin, Morgan, Connolly, Henderson, Cameron, Morrison, Stephenson, O’Keefe.

25th September 1932 // Dundalk 0-2 Shamrock Rovers // League

Dundalk suffered their first defeat of the season at the Athletic Grounds and could not have any complaints as to the outcome. Due to the tragic death of his sister, Sam Patton was absent from the line-up. His absence was surely felt with his replacement centre-half, Slowey, had a poor outing. Lewis was forced to save early from Doyle. Soon the Rovers forward was not to be denied when he latched onto a throughball from Matthews and scored with a left-footed drive. Dundalk had a great chance to equalise when McMahon was put through by Smith but his shot was weak.
In the second half, Mooney cleared off the Rovers line and cleared long to Smith. He cut in and scored a fine goal with a low drive off the post.

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Johnston, Slowey, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

Shamrock Rovers: McDonnell, Chervi, Mooney, Glenn, Matthews, Kinsella, Byrne, Flood, Doyle, Gaskins, Smith.

 2nd October 1932 // Cork Bohs 0-1 Dundalk // League

Dundalk maintained their one point lead in the table with a narrow win in Cork. The goal came midway through the second half after Coughlan, the Cork keeper, ran off his line to intercept a free-kick. He totally lost sight of the ball and McCourt pounced to give Dundalk the lead. Nelson, McDiarmuid and Lewis defended resolutely in the closing stages.

Dundalk: Lewis, Nelson, McDiarmuid, Johnston, Patton, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smith, McCourt, McMahon.

9th October 1932 // Dundalk 4-2 Bohemians // League

Dundalk’s first ever league victory over Bohemians!! A large crowd in the Athletic Grounds witnessed a pulsating match. Dundalk were forced into one change with Clarke being promoted from the junior ranks in place of the injured Nelson. The right-full made an excellent debut.
Bohs attacked overplayed their attempts at breaking through the strong Dundalk defence, superbly marshalled by Patton and Hirst. Dundalk took the lead after 15 minutes when Burke’s long range shot was superbly saved by Morgan. Following up on the rebound was Carroll to head home. Just one minute later and Bohs were level when McMahon slotted home a penalty after a foul by Lewis. Dundalk stepped it up and went 2-1 up when Patton sent McMahon through and he beat Morgan with an unstoppable shot.
In the second half, Mitchell converted a well placed Hirst free-kick. Within a minute of that goal Morgan saved a penalty from Patton but was unable to prevent a goal from the rebound. Dwyer scored a consolation late on for Bohs.

Dundalk: Lewis, Clarke, McDiarmuid, Patton, Duffy, Hirst, Carroll, Mitchell, Smtih, McCourt, Burke

Bohemians: Morgan, Morris, McEvoy, Power, McMahon, Kirby, Ellis, Jordan, Grimes, Horlacher, Dwyer.

October 15th 1932 // St James’ Gate 2-3 Dundalk // League

Dundalk stayed top of the league after a hard fought 3-2 win at the Iveagh Grounds. It should have been much easier as Dundalk lead 3-0 at half time. The opening goal was a gift. Gate goalkeeper O’Reilly slipped in coming out for a free-kick, the ball struck the crossbar, and Smith scored. Burke and another from Smith gave Dundalk a comfortable lead but two goals from Ebbs in the second half (one a penalty) put St James Gate right back into it. Patton played for the Free State League selection team in the 2-0 win over the Welsh League in Dalymount Park one day later.

October 22nd 1932 // Dundalk 2-1 Bray Unknowns // League

Dundalk stayed three points clear after this win over Bray at the Ramparts. Bray keeper Frame kept the visitors in the match for most of the 1st half. Just before the interval Dundalk broke the deadlock when McDiarmuid, in a rare foray into the opposition half, picked up possession and delivered a mighty drive to the back of the net. Smith then broke through early in the second half and struck home with a powerful shot. Bray scored a late consolation through Hogan.

Dolphins equalised after 18 minutes with a soft goal after a rare error by Lewis. Dundalk took the lead with another penalty after 30 minutes after a handball with Patton scoring at the second attempt after Slater saved. It was 2-2 after 32 minutes when Fallon headed home Watt’s cross. It was 3-2 after 40 minutes when Carroll broke free on the right and delivered a great cross for Burke who headed past Slater. McCourt made it 4-2 with the last kick of the 1st half. Carroll finished the scoring after 75 minutes.

With Shamrock Rovers being beaten 5-2 by Dolphin, Dundalk took on another one of their nearest rivals at Shelbourne Park in front of 18,000 people. Dundalk were unlucky not to take all three points. Smith opened the scoring but Wonnacott soon equalised with a header. Dundalk suffered a blow with an injury to Nelson that forced him to withdraw. Dundalk took the lead in the second half with Bilcliff dropped the ball and Mitchell shot into an empty goal. Palmer rescued a point for Shels later on.

Dundalk were two goals up at half-time and maintained that lead until a late goal from Miller. Dundalk’s attacks were relentless. Five points clear of Shamrock Rovers and six clear of Shelbourne, Dundalk only require four more points to win the title.  A huge attendance enjoyed a great game. While Lewis was assured as normal in the Dundalk goal, Cork were without their usual keeper and played much of the game with an injury to Connolly (no subs permitted). Goals by Burke (2), Smith (2) and McCourt for Dundalk sealed the points. Cork’s goals came from Lappin and O’Keefe.

Dundalk fought back and played some excellent football. Burke scored to give the visitors the lead when he converted Carroll’s cross after 30 minutes.
