20 April 2008: “We’re delighted to get the result…we’re top of the league and we’re still three points clear, so we’ll take that. ” - Duffy

Jamie Duffy’s second-half strike proved to be the match winning goal for Dundalk, as the winger capped an all-round impressive display in the Lilywhites’ 2-1 win in Limerick on Friday evening. The 24-year-old won a first-half penalty which David Crawley converted, before he found the net himself just after the break as his deflected goal-bound effort looped over ‘keeper Jimmy Fyffe and into the net.

And, afterwards, Jamie was obviously pleased with the result, and his first ever club goal, even if it was slightly fortuitous. “What a finish!” was Duffy’s sarcastic reaction to the goal when speaking to dundalkfc.com at the final whistle. “We should have been comfortable by then; the goal we conceded was a bit of a mix-up, but it’s the result that counts. We made it hard for ourselves in the second-half, and we can’t keep doing that. But, we’re top of the league and we’re still three points clear, so we’ll take that. It’s a very, very tough place to come here; it’s always very physical.

“Obviously, when we went 2-0 up, we thought it might be comfortable, but then we gave the goal away. But we’re delighted to get the result in the end. We started really quickly; we knew it was going to be difficult, so we made sure to get in their faces, win the battle and then go on and, hopefully, win playing football. We didn’t really do that, because the game didn’t allow us to do that. We were delighted with the first-half performance, the second-half wasn’t so good, but we’ll take the win.”

Manager John Gill was also happy with Duffy’s contribution, however, he feels that the Texas-born star is not yet fulfilling his full potential. “There’s still an awful lot more to come from Jamie,” Gill said. “There’s a player in there, an explosive player, but I think we’re only scratching the surface as regards his ability at the moment. We’ve got to try to get more out of him, but in saying that, you can’t question his performance tonight.”
