30 MAY 2008: "Tonight, as a team, we showed that we're all in it together and we'll battle right to the end" - Mulvenna
Super sub Tiarnán Mulvenna entered from the bench midway through the second-half and fired a priceless winner six minutes from time to down the challenge of Sporting Fingal at Oriel Park on Thursday night. The 19-year-old scored from a rebound after Paul Crowley’s initial effort crashed back off the post, with Mulvenna stating afterwards that he thought his team-mate’s shot was goal-bound. “I thought it was actually in,” he said. “I was about to wheel away. Paul Crowley does them before games, he does them kind of volleys, but then it hit the post, and it was just a reaction, really.”
Clearly pleased with the outcome at the end of an action packed evening, Mulvenna feels that this victory and the team’s undying spirit will now see Dundalk push on in the race for promotion. “I’m delighted,” he admitted. “It shows what we have as a team, after going down to ten men. Tonight, as a team, we showed that we’re all in it together and we’ll battle right to the end. It was one of those crazy games, where you’re just standing there and you don’t really know what is going to happen. In the end, though, we came through.
“Once we scored (the first), we went on top straight away. Even when they got their second, I thought we were on top throughout. Paul Marney, as our right-full, went in goals, and he only touched the ball once from
play, and that was straight into his hands. They had two other shots and they went wide, so that shows what dominance we had in the game. This win will really lift us, and it’s where we should go on from now.”
