Byrne happy with hat-trick
Dundalk FC defeated Portadown in a friendly at Oriel Park on Monday night. Sam Byrne was on target with all three goals and was delighted with scoring and his overall performance.
Speaking to dundalkfc.com after the 3-1 victory, the 22-year-old on loan from Everton FC talked about settling in to a new position and netting a hat-trick.
“I am very happy with scoring a hat-trick,” said Byrne. “Playing in central midfield was a new position for me. It was good for me to get a bit of game time in and improve on my fitness and sharpness, then obviously to score a hat-trick then on top of it was a bonus.
“It was a hard enough game against Portadown. They were a tough opposition who had their chances to score too so we needed to stay on our toes and thankfully we got the goals for the win.
“Scoring late in our last league win against Waterford was massive for us. It puts us four points behind Cork with a game in hand. It was a massive result and something we can build on I hope.
The Lilywhites travel west to Sligo for their next fixture on Saturday and the Dubliner is hoping to earn victory and all three points.
“The plan is to go to the Showgrounds and get a win – that’s what the main aim is. If we can go there and get three points then we will stay just behind the league leaders.”
