Duffy: Fantastic Fans
Reflecting on Saturday’s EA SPORTS Cup triumph, Michael Duffy says the club’s first trophy this season is as much for the supporters as it is for the players.
There were over 1,200 Dundalk fans at Tallaght Stadium and many more watching on EirSport as the Lilywhites overcame rivals Shamrock Rovers.
The victory brought delight to everyone of a Dundalk persuasion and Duffy, speaking to dundalkfc.com, acknowledged the supporters’ contribution.
“I had a great day, it was brilliant” he said. “It was really my first final, I won the FAI Cup with Derry but I was only a young boy and I didn’t make the squad or nothing so this was like the first proper cup being involved and winning it – It was a great feeling and I really enjoyed it.
“The supporters were brilliant, it actually felt like we were at home and like we had more of a crowd there. They were really loud and we could hear them singing the whole game so it was brilliant.
“Winning the cup is definitely as much about the supporters as it is for us players. There was a big crowd from Dundalk that travelled and I’m sure they were delighted. They stayed after when we were lifting the trophy so it was a brilliant day for everyone.
The fans might have celebrated long and hard but for the players it was business as usual this week when they trained at Oriel Park ahead of their SSE Airtricity League clash against Drogheda United.
“We just want to keep building on or form, we’ve been playing well for the past two months and we want to take that into the Drogheda and Cork games. Then we have the semi-final of the FAI Cup against Shamrock Rovers which is going to be huge.
“We’ll obviously being going into that confident after beating them 3-0 and hopefully we’ll get to another final and give the fans a day out in the AVIVA.”
