Dundalk Lose In Tallaght
Dundalk suffered their fifth league defeat of the season on Friday night as they were defeated 2-1 by Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium.
First half goals from Ronan Finn and David McAllister were enough for the hosts to take all three points on what was a disappointing night for the three-in-a-row champions. Niclas Vemmelund grabbed a consolation in injury-time.
It was a lively opening to the game with both sides powering forward but it was Rovers who had the first chance of the game when Trevor Clarke got onto Paddy Barrett’s attempted header backwards but Gary Rogers was out well to save.
Graham Burke was next but his shot was straight at Rogers while from outside the box David McAllister volleyed from 30 yards but struck the side netting.
The champions got into the game more with Michael Duffy’s free-kick tipped over the bar brilliantly by Tomer Chencinski and from the corner Duffy found Sean Hoare however he could only head over the crossbar.
Rovers took the lead on 16 minutes when Burke got free on the right hand side past Massey and fed Ronan Finn who had space in the box and he drilled the ball to the corner past Rogers.
Dundalk responded well and Duffy struck after David McMillan’s layoff but it was saved by Chencinski before Conor Clifford found space for himself 20 yards from goal but he skimmed the top of the crossbar.
Burke had a header blocked from six yards by Niclas Vemmelund however it was 2-0 on 37 minutes when Burke again was provider and McAllister found himself with a free header at the back post heading to the net past the right arm of Rogers.
That seemed to shock Dundalk a little as they struggled to gain any sort of momentum towards the end of the half with Dane Massey forcing an easy save from the goalkeeper when he struck inside the area.
Dundalk began the second half on the front foot and Chris Shields played a defence splitting pass to the waiting Patrick McEleney but his first time shot was blocked down by Webster.
Rovers were in control of possession for a period but didn’t create anything until Burke’s cross was acrobatically met by Gary Shaw but somehow Rogers clawed it away.
Dundalk had a penalty shout turned down when Roberto Lopes handled Massey’s cross in the box but the referee waved away the protests while Mountney’s cross caused problems for the goalkeeper but it bounced to safety.
Ciaran Kilduff had a pair of headers gathered easily by the goalkeeper however Vemmelund pulled back a consolation in injury-time from McEleney’s free-kick however it wasn’t enough as 10 man Rovers were winners.
