Gartland: Getting minutes

First Team News

Brian Gartland was delighted to be given a chance to impress against Portadown on Monday night at Oriel Park where the Lilywhites came from behind to run out 3-1 winner thanks to a Sam Byrne hat-trick.

Assessing the match, Gartland spoke to dundalkfc.com about the positives to take from a game against strong opposition.

“It was good to get 90 minutes,” said Gartland. “Away from training games it’s good to get something else to keep you on your toes. Tonight was just about getting minutes under my belt and improving fitness.

“There was one or two familiar faces there from my time spent at Portadown but it’s mostly on the coaching staff. They had a lot of young lads playing and it’s looking promising for them going forward – they’ve a few good players.”

Stephen Kenny’s side struck late in their last league outing against Waterford and the 31-year-old told how “the last minute goal was massive”. The reaction on the touchline said it all. It doesn’t matter who it’s against, whether it’s a team at the top or a team at the bottom,” he said.

“You saw it a couple of years ago when we went on to win the league, we had a couple of late winners. It was 4-3 and 3-2 against Wexford and Longford who were two bottom teams in the league – we celebrated them wins the same.

“It’s going to happen during the season but you’ve to be in that situation. We were disappointed with the first two games of the season being 0-0 that we didn’t push on and get a winner. It’s massive for the belief going forward in tight games that you can go and get that winner.”

Dundalk travel to the Showgrounds to take on Sligo Rovers this Saturday and the defender is hoping to continue the record of not conceding a goal yet this season and claiming three points.

“The Showgrounds is a tough place to go, they’ve always a good crowd over there. Adam Morgan has scored a few goals for them so far and they’ll be confident at home.

“We need to go and get three points away from home. We’ve been solid so far, conceded very little chances and no goals.

“I suppose we’ve always had a great away record and scored a lot of goals on the road so hopefully we get back to that this Saturday.”
