Ian Foster is expecting a “decent test” in his first game as manager of Dundalk when Athlone Town are the visitors to Oriel Park on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 2pm). The game is one of six planned pre-season friendlies and gets the Lilywhites’ preparations for next month’s Premier Division kick-off underway in earnest after pre-season training started last week, while it will also see long-serving goalkeeper Chris Bennion make a swift return to the border venue after recently signing for the Midlanders.
'Decent test'
“It will be a decent test for the boys,” Foster told dundalkfc.com. “Athlone will come here and get the ball down and play, and it will be a decent level of football for the players. Ultimately, it’s just about getting fitness. Of course, you want to win every game, but it’s about the lads getting minutes on the pitch, getting match practice, getting back into the swing of things, and it’s an opportunity for myself and Wayne (Hatswell) to have a look at one or two individuals. That’s what we’re using it for, that’s what pre-season games are for and it’s an opportunity for players to get up to the level of match fitness – you can only get match fitness by playing matches.”
Drinks promotion
After that comes the English Premier League meeting of Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge (kick-off 4pm), again on the big screen, while later on in the evening, from 10.30pm onwards, Paul Brannigan will provide live music. To celebrate Foster’s first game in charge of the club, all drinks (including Foster's!) will be €3 up until the music starts, with all soft drinks priced at €1.80.
