Sam Malsom has bolstered Ian Foster’s strikeforce and become the final piece of Dundalk's jigsaw after putting pen to paper on a one-year full-time deal with the club on Friday afternoon, stating the “ambition” of the club persuaded him to move to Ireland. The 22-year-old was on trial at Oriel Park earlier this month, impressing in a draw with Athlone Town and two days later in a win over Shelbourne, and Foster has struck a deal to bring the English-born forward to the club and make him the last member of the squad.
Malsom ‘delighted’
Malsom was most recently playing football with Throttur in Iceland and previously lined out for B36 Torshavn in the Faroe Islands, and he has turned down two offers from Iceland to further strengthen Dundalk’s squad ahead of next Friday’s league opener at Bray Wanderers. And the Torquay native, who recently spent time training with Tiverton Town to keep fit, expressed his happiness at completing his move to the League of Ireland. “I’m really delighted to have signed,” Sam told dundalkfc.com moments after signing.
Eyeing success
“I just want to get playing now,” he added, “start training and hopefully score a few goals for the team. I thought I done well in training (during the trial). I should have scored a goal in a game but I thought I worked hard, I done well for the team and tried my hardest, so I was happy enough. I had two offers in Iceland. They were OK offers but I think the main reason I’ve come to this club is because it’s a club with ambition, and there’s a great management team with Ian and Hats (Wayne Hatswell) here. I’m really delighted to be here and I’m hoping to do well.
Aiming for goal
“I think we can challenge for the top three with the squad we’ve got,” the former Torquay United and Plymouth Argyle striker continued. “I think Ian has put a great team together here, there are some great players here and I think we’ve got to aim for the top three, and hopefully I can score a few goals to help us to achieve that. I think with the players that we have here they can create chances, and hopefully I can put them away. I’m definitely confident of scoring goals this season. It’s a good stadium and the pitch is nice. I’m used to playing on the pitch from obviously playing in the Faroe Islands before. All the training facilities here are fantastic, really. Ireland is a great place; I enjoyed it when I was on trial here. I think it’s decent, and I'm really looking forward to playing here.”
