Under-17s Season Review

// 11 Nov 2017

Dundalk FC Under-17s season came to an end in mid-October in the RSC following a heart-breaking defeat to Waterford FC on penalties in the quarter-final of the SSE Airtricity Under-17 Elite League. Liam Burns and Thomas Mc Shane guided their side comfortably into the top four of their Northern Elite Division to qualify for the final eight.

The squad has developed well over the past few years with many new recruits who have settled well into the squad and provided strength in depth across all positions. Between the sticks both David Odumsu (formerly of Bay United FC) and Dunleer’s Uli Keller have received many plaudits throughout the season while ex Quay Celtic FC defender James Prendergast, skippered the squad this season with aplomb until his injury during the superb Mark Farren Cup victory over Bohemian FC.

However, another local, Mark Traynor took over the armband and stepped into the breach without fail and providing a number of crucial goals. In midfield the competition for places has been equally as fierce with Adam Kirwan, Chris Mc Fadden and former Glenmuir FC players Jamie Browne and Mark Prendergast vying for positions in the engine room.

Up front, former Quay Celtic FC striker Luke Gorham went on an amazing run of five goals in five games during the season, as well as getting  called up to the Under-19s on several occasions. Luke also showed his versatility throughout the season as he showed his excellent pace to great effect on the wing to accommodate the prolific Danilus Bogdanous up front.

The boys can feel very proud of their achievements this season in both the league (4th position and qualified for the quarter-finals) and the Mark Farren Cup (beating 2016 winners Bohemian FC).

The strength of our partnership with Malahide United was underlined with the signings of Kevin Kelly and Luke Byrne midway through last season and both have pushed on again this season with Kevin spending some time playing and training with our Under-19 squad.
