Under-19 Season Review

// 20 Nov 2017

Dundalk FC Under-19s, under the stewardship of Martin Connolly, Mick Neville and Brian Donnelly enjoyed some great success in the Enda McGuill Memorial Cup this year by capturing the trophy named after our former chairman, courtesy of a Jack O’Keeffe strike in extra time of the final against a UCD AFC side who had represented the league in European competition this season.

The run began with a 3-0 win away to Monaghan United/Cavan Football Partnership followed by another 3-0 win in the next round. This time a Jack O’Keeffe hat-trick downed Bray Wanderers FC. Then it was on to United Park in Drogheda where the home side were beaten 5-1 before a 4-1 victory over Cobh Ramblers FC in St Colman’s Park- including a goal of the season contender from Jack O’Keeffe- set up that titanic struggle against UCD AFC.

In the league, despite scoring heavily regularly throughout the season, a bad run of results in the final few league games saw the young Lilywhites edged out of a place in the quarter finals before being defeated by Cabinteely FC in the knockout stages of the Shield competition.

There was a great sense of competition throughout the squad with many local players featuring regularly- at the back, Kilcurry native Emmett Hughes and former Quay Celtic FC centre back Gavin Smith stepped up from recent seasons with the Under-17s while Dean Watters, Adam Finnegan and Carlton Ubaezuono challenged for midfield and attacking births having also been snapped up as locals in the Under-17s a few years ago.

Added to the mix this season were James Woods, Matt Lyons, Cian Flynn and Aaron Townley who had played in the league last year for Athlone Town FC, Shelbourne FC and Bohemian FC respectively. While, for the senior side, Eric Whelan, Jake O Connor and Jack O’Keefe were involved in league and cup competitions on a regular basis.

Overall, all of the players and management involved in the panel this year can take great pride in their achievements this season and we thank them and their parents for their efforts throughout.
