First Team News
// 28 Feb 2015

Dundalk were crowned President’s Cup winners against St. Patrick’s Athletic on Saturday afternoon!

In difficult conditions at Oriel Park, Chris Forrester gave Pat’s the lead however a quickfire double from Richie Towell and a terrific volley from Daryl Horgan gave the Lilywhites the trophy.

Dundalk had the first chance of the game when Dane Massey blazed over the bar from distance after  a John Mountney cross while Sean Gannon headed just wide from Daryl Horgan’s centre.

Christy Fagan had a great chance when Chris Shields was dispossessed by Killian Brennan but last season’s top scorer shot straight at Gary Rogers. David McMillan should have found the net when he was slipped in by Ronan Finn but his shot was well saved by Brendan Clarke.

The Lilywhites fell behind on 34 minutes when Conan Byrne got around Massey and squared it brilliantly and Chris Forrester who finished to the net.

The lead only lasted a matter of seconds as straight from kick-off, Ronan Finn’s ball ricochet in the path of Daryl Horgan who unleashed a pile driver volley to the top right hand corner.

It was 2-1 to Dundalk a minute later when Massey’s throw was delightfully taken in by Finn and he crossed for the on rushing Towell and he passed the ball to the bottom right corner past Clarke.

After manic 3 minutes, the scores were level at the break.

The second half took a while to get going but Horgan almost doubled his tally when he shot at Clarke and his delightfully curling strike was deflected just wide of the post.

Massey’s header looped into the arms of the goalkeeper while Towell had a great effort sail just wide of the post under pressure from Sean Hoare.

Finn could have finished it off with a few minutes remaining but his rasping effort was just over the bar.

Pat’s had a chance to level it at the death when Darragh Markey found space on the edge of the box after Bermingham’s cross but his effort was well saved by Rogers in the Dundalk goal.

That proved to be the final action of note as Dundalk won the President’s Cup!
