Benson: We Were Deserving Winners
Dundalk midfielder Robbie Benson was relieved after clinching the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup on Sunday. Speaking to dundalkfc.com after the 2-1 victory over Cork City, Benson had the thoughts of the previous two weeks in his mind leading up to the game.
“The last two years leaving the AVIVA Stadium we were disappointed. From my own point of view, I was thinking that I couldn’t lose three in a row. We were very controlled on the day.
“We were able to control the game and control our emotions. We controlled the game for large periods and I feel we were fully deserving winners. ”
The Athlone native feels that it may have been a different game had the Lilywhites held on to their 1-0 lead for longer than 60 seconds however he was full of praise for his midfield partner Patrick McEleney who headed home the winner.
“If we had to hold out after scoring first we may have been a bit more comfortable but we didn’t and it turned into a different game.
“It was disappointing to concede straight away but we got it done in the end. Big goal from Patrick (McEleney) to get the winner, probably the worst goal of his career! But a great goal for us and got us over the line. ”
The 26 year-old feels that the midfield battle was key and believes that Dundalk’s three were better than the Leesiders three which was the winning of the game.
“Our midfield three was better than theirs on Sunday. They press very well and it is such a big pitch. There’s a lot of ground to make up and that is what made it difficult for them at times.
“We knew that if we could keep the ball for periods that gaps would open up for us and that is what happened. We got the ball wide and were able to get the winner. A great day for us and great to win The Double.”
