Dundalk Football Club are delighted to announce that captain Brian Gartland has extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2020 season.

The 32-year-old centre back joined the Lilywhites from Portadown in July 2013 and, since then, has been a bedrock of the back four in a time of unprecedented success for the club.

With 214 Dundalk appearances and 35 goals to his name, Gartland has accumulated a spectacular haul of winners’ medals in his time at Oriel Park, including four SSE Airtricity League titles, two FAI Cups and two EA Sports Cups.

Gartland was appointed Dundalk club captain for the 2019 season, having led the side to a league and cup double in 2018, following injury to previous skipper Stephen O’Donnell.

The Dubliner has made over 20 appearances in European football and news of his contract extension serves as a boost to the Lilywhites as they prepare to begin this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign at home to Latvian champions Riga FC tomorrow (10 July).

Brian Gartland said: “I’m delighted to get the deal done. I’ve been at Dundalk for six great years already and it’s the only place I want to be, so to come to an agreement that secures my future and that both myself and the club are happy with is terrific. There’s nowhere else in the country that you’d want to be playing football. The ambition of the club and the plans going forward are really exciting. It’s great to be a part of and I hope that I can play my part and help drive it forward to continued success.”

Dundalk FC head coach Vinny Perth said: “Having Brian signed on for next year is really positive for us as a team. Brian is our captain and leader and, while he continues to lead on the pitch, I cannot understate the value he also gives us off it. With the changes to our club in January, Brian has also been a rock for me personally. The club, board and owners recognised this and we are more than happy to extend his contract. The management team are excited to have Brian on board and look forward to working with him again next season.”

Dundalk FC chairman Mike Treacy said: “It’s great to have agreed a deal with Brian that extends his time here at Dundalk Football Club. He’s a true captain for the club in every sense – a real leader on and off the pitch and a serial winner who continues to demand the highest standards from himself and everyone around him. Everyone at the club and in the community holds him in the highest regard and we’re delighted to extend his contract with the club.”
