Brian Gartland has officially been named as Dundalk FC club captain ahead of the 2019 SSE Airtricity League season. Gartland told dundalkfc.com he was proud of being awarded the honour of leading the Lilywhites out on a permanent basis.
He said: “It’s a massive honour to be captain of the club. It’s a really proud moment for myself and for my family. This club is the best club in the country these past five or six years. We’ve set standards and been recognised as one of the best teams in the league of Ireland for a considerable time – so to be named captain of that group of players and this club is really really special.
“It’s really exciting to be captain in this new era of the club. It’s an exciting period for us players we have a very strong squad with lots of depth. In terms of personal development and to be the best captain that I can be, I have to look at myself and see where I can improve and be better for the people around me. I want to be the best I can be for the club and for the lads.
“There are so many lads that could’ve been named instead of me, we have so many leaders in the team. There are so many lads that lead by example with what they do on the pitch every week consistently. Stepping up in big games with big moments so we are really blessed and I suppose one of the reasons we are so successful, we have so many players with that mentality.
“By in large I need to keep my game right, I have to continue to have the same character that I have had for the last six years because that is what led to me being fortunate enough to be named club captain.
“I have learned from a great captain in Stephen O’Donnell over the years. I have learned lots from him about how he played the role, you don’t have to be exactly the same but you can take snippets from what you’ve seen before.
“I think the main thing you need to be a good captain is that you need to be a good performer on the pitch. You need to be performing at a high standard consistently like we have over the years. The best way to lead is by example, you lead on the pitch, on the training pitch and in the dressing room.”
