Dundalk FC defender, Daniel Cleary, believes winning the SSE Airtricity League title is one of his best achievements. The Lilywhites secured the title for the fourth time in five years after a 1-1 draw against St. Patrick’s Athletic at Oriel Park.

The defender spoke of his pride for an incredible campaign, which has ranked amongst his best personally.

“It was a great feeling. It’s a feeling that you can’t describe, everyone is buzzing and it will probably take a while to settle in,” Cleary reflected.

“It was a big night on Friday. We knew we needed one point to do it so we’re happy that we got that. St. Pats tried to sit in and frustrate us, it wasn’t our best game but we got the point in the end.

“It’s a great feeling, this is my first proper trophy. All of us really enjoyed our celebrations over the weekend but it’s time now to get ready for the FAI Cup Final.

“We have an unbelievable squad and we’re all good friends. We back each other up when times get tough and it’s been an unbelievable effort all season, I think we deserve our success.

“I’m happy with myself this season. It was a good start for me personally, I came in and done well. I’ve played a lot of games and I’m happy with that but the team have been unbelievable.

“It’s not down to one player on this team, there is a lot of really good individuals and that’s what separates us from other teams – we stick together.”

The Lilywhites are set to take on Cork City in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup Final at Aviva Stadium on Sunday, 4th November.

“We have the Cup Final now in a month, it’s a great season me in my first professional season so I’m really looking forward to that,” said the 22-year-old.

“I’m learning every single day that I come to Oriel Park. I’ve got a lot to learn and I always want to learn. The Gaffer and Vinny Perth have been great, everyone is trying to make you a better player and I want to keep on learning.

“We’ll give Europe a right good go next season. We’re a bit disappointed with how this season went in Europe so we’ll definitely be ready for next season.”
