Dundalk FC Supporters Willing To Lend A Helping Hand
A number of Dundalk FC match night volunteers and supporters have offered to lend a helping hand to people that have been affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
The government has advised anyone with symptoms of the virus to self-isolate for 14 days while anyone who has been in close contact with a case of coronavirus has also been directed to self-quarantine.
People aged 60 and over have been identified as one of the groups most at risk and have been advised to avoid crowded spaces and keep their distance from visitors, leading to a fear that they may become socially isolated and vulnerable.
With that in mind, a number of Lilywhites fans have made themselves available to carry out day-to-day tasks for people such as picking up shopping and prescriptions, posting letters, dropping off food and calling or texting on neighbours and friends to check on their general well-being.
“Over the past 24 hours, I have had a number of offers from supporters and match night volunteers who are willing to help out during this extremely challenging and unprecedented time,” said Dundalk FC Chief Operating Officer Martin Connolly.
“There are elderly and vulnerable people around town who may be self-isolating and, as a result, small things, like picking up a bit of shopping or walking a dog might be a huge challenge for them.
“A lot of them will be feeling lonely and anxious about the whole situation so it’s important we let them know that people are willing to look out for them and assist in any way possible.”
The offer comes at a time when the number of coronavirus cases in the Republic of Ireland stands at 90.
“It’s a great gesture from our supporters and I think it displays the real sense of community that exists at Dundalk FC and in the town itself,” said Connolly.
“Public health is a priority and the most important thing is that our supporters, players, staff and community remain safe at this time.”
