Dundalk FC v Rapid Wien | MD-1 Press Conference

Europa League
// 25 Nov 2020

Lilywhites defenders Sean Gannon and Daniel Cleary attended the MD-1 Press Conference at the Dublin Arena ahead of Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League Group D game with Rapid Wien. Here’s a selection of their quotes from the session.

Cleary…on tomorrow night’s clash
“If we keep a clean sheet I think we’ll be successful. Conceding four killed us in Vienna so the key tomorrow night will be keeping a clean sheet.”

Gannon….on the MD3 loss game in Austria
“We played really well. To go away from home and score three goals shows we were very competitive and we were very unlucky. We can take confidence from that and last Friday’s win over Bohemians. We know there wasn’t much between us in the last game and we feel we have a real chance.”

Cleary…on playing three at the back
“Everyone has adapted to it quite well. We have the players to play a three, a five or a two, and the quality to chop and change. I think it’s going quite well. We have good ball-playing centre backs and if we go with that system again tomorrow it will work well.”

Gannon….on playing in a wing-back role
“I’m a professional footballer. The manager has come in and asked me to play a few different positions. It doesn’t matter where I play, I’ll give my all for the team. It’s not that different from my normal role, I like to get forward anyway and if he asks me to play I’ll always go out and try my best.”

Cleary…on the belief in the squad
“In Vienna, I think we showed how competitive we can be in Europe at the top level and after scoring three goals away in Europe, we have nothing to fear. We’re going into tomorrow’s games with lots of confidence.”

Gannon… on having fun
“There’s obviously that element but we’re not here to make up the numbers, we’re here on merit and although things have gone against us in previous games we’ve been competitive and there are lots of positives to take. When we go out, we don’t feel inferior. Yeah, we want to have fun and enjoy it, but now that we are here we want to win games and get points on the board.”
