Dundalk Held In Opener

Dundalk were held to a scoreless draw in their SSE Airtricity League opener by Bray Wanderers on Friday night.

It was a scrappy opening to the game with both sides struggling to get any rhythm.

Stephen Folan looked like continuing his fine pre-season form as he flashed a header just wide of the target before Jamie McGrath’s left footed shot was well saved by Aaron Dillon in goal.

Robbie Benson fired just over the bar from the edge of the area before Dean Jarvis almost marked his debut with a spectacular goal however his dipping volley was inches wide of the right hand post.

Benson warmed the gloves of Dillon with an effort from just outside the area while at the other end Stephen Folan got across excellently to block Aaron Greene’s effort after he got away from Dane Massey.

Corey Galvin almost gave the visitors the lead when he weaved his way past two defenders but Gary Rogers produced a superb save from point blank range to maintain parity.

Jarvis, who was lively on the left, crossed brilliantly for Murray who missed and it fell to Benson but it was well tipped over by Dillon.

Michael Duffy’s deflected effort was into the palms of the goalkeeper just before the break and it proved to be the final action of the half with the sides level at 0-0 at the interval.

The second half continued in similar fashion to the first with Dundalk having all the ball. They had their first effort of of note when Duffy’s corner fell to McGrath on the edge of the area but his shot was skewed wide.

There was sustained pressure from the Lilywhites however it wasn’t until the 70th minute when substitute Krisztian Adorjan looped a header from Jarvis’ cross towards goal and it was palmed over by the goalkeeper.

A superb flowing move followed when Duffy and Benson linked up wonderfully on the edge of the area with the latter shooting but it was centimetres wide from putting Stephen Kenny’s men deservedly in front.

Dundalk were almost punished for their rued chances when caught on the break when Gary McCabe was through one on one however Rogers closed the angle brilliantly and blocked the ball to safety.

That proved to be the final action of the night as the game finished 0-0 despite some late pressure at Oriel Park.
