Dundalk Held In Tallaght

First Team News
// 23 Feb 2018

Dundalk were held to a second straight scoreless draw in the 2018 SSE Airtricity League against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium.

It was a scrappy opening to the game with neither side getting a foothold and only half chances were on show.

It was Dundalk who had all of the possession and it was Michael Duffy’s shot from an acute angle which was the best of the opening period which was easily gathered by Kevin Horgan.

Brandon Miele crashed the post with a stunning effort from 30 yards but Daniel Cleary was there to clear the follow up from Gary Shaw.

That was the closest Rovers came in the opening period and the Lilywhites almost benefited from their mistake when Ally Gilchrist put past Horgan but he was able to get back and clear despite pressure from Ronan Murray.

Daniel Cleary had the best chance to put the visitors in front when the ball fell to the centre-half after Duffy’s cross was spilled however he blasted over from in 10 yards.

Duffy was a live wire and he broke brilliantly from a Rovers corner and jinked past four players and laid it off to Jamie McGrath however his effort from 30 yards didn’t threaten the goal.

It was scoreless at the break with the Lilywhites dominating proceedings.

Robbie Benson had the first effort of the second period when he shot on the turn from the edge of the box but it was easy for Horgan.

Dundalk should have taken the lead on the hour mark when Benson brilliantly created space and threaded a superb ball through to Hoban but he pulled the shot wide when one on one with Horgan.

The game descended into more of a scrap for the next half an hour with both sides struggling to get any sort of rhythm.

Dundalk had a chance when substitute Adorján headed well wide after Duffy’s cross while Dane Massey fired well wide from the edge of the area after Duffy’s cross once more.

That proved to be the final action as the Lilywhites had their second goalless draw in succession.
