PLAYER PROFILE
The longest-serving member of the current first-team squad, Chris Shields has five SSE Airtricity League titles, three FAI Cups, three League Cups, a host of individual honours and two UEFA Europa League group stage qualifications to his name.
A native of Clondalkin, Shields spent his youth with the underage teams at St Francis before joining Bray in 2008 at the age of 18. Shields became a key part of the Seagulls side as they battled relegation successfully over the next three seasons.
After moving to Sean McCaffrey’s Dundalk ahead of the 2012 season, he was made club captain but a dismal season followed and the Lilywhites narrowly escaped the drop, only staying up after a two-legged victory over Waterford United in a promotion/relegation play-off.
Shields was one of just three players, along with John Mountney and Peter Cherrie, who remained at the club when Stephen Kenny took over ahead of the 2013 season and he went on to become an integral part of the side that won three successive leagues between 2014 and 2016. He was also hugely influential in the team’s 2016 European run, playing in five of the six UEFA Europa League group stage fixtures.
After lifting the EA Sports Cup in 2017, Shields helped the Lilywhites to a third league and FAI Cup double in 2018 and four domestic trophies a year later. He was named as club captain ahead of the 2020 season, a campaign which saw him lead Dundalk to the UEFA Europa League group stages for the second time and end with him lifting the FAI Cup after a 4-2 win over Shamrock Rovers.
A talented and passionate midfielder, he has firmly established himself as a Dundalk legend during his nine seasons at Oriel Park.
