Michael Duffy began his career with hometown club Derry City where he rose through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut for the Candystripes in September 2012.
He spent two full seasons at the Brandywell before moving across the water to join Celtic, where he was part of the development squad. During his time at Parkhead, he was capped at underage level by Northern Ireland where he worked under current Lilywhites sporting director Jim Magilton.
After finding his opportunities for first-team football at Parkhead limited, Duffy went on loan at Alloa Celtic and impressed on a season-long loan during the 2015/16 campaign. He made 38 appearances for Alloa before spending the second half of 2016 on loan at Dundee.
Duffy returned to Ireland to join Dundalk in January 2017 and over the course of the next four seasons, the lightning-quick winger earned a reputation as one of the best players in the League of Ireland and was voted as the PFAI’s Player of the Year in 2018 after helping Dundalk to the double.
He was also a key part of Dundalk’s success in 2019, scoring 16 times in all competitions as Vinny Perth’s side went within a penalty shootout of completing a domestic clean sweep of honours. The Lilywhites winger followed that up with another fine season in 2020 as Dundalk qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stages and won the FAI Cup.
After declaring for the Republic of Ireland in 2018, Duffy was earmarked for a place in Stephen Kenny’s squad for the UEFA Nations League clash with Bulgaria in November 2020 but the call-up fell through as his international clearance had not been processed.
