Giovagnoli looking to put extra time on training ground to use

Lilywhites head coach Filippo Giovagnoli said he was intent on putting some extra time on the training ground to good use following the cancellation of Friday evening’s SSE Airtricity League fixture against St Patrick’s Athletic.

The game at Richmond Park was postponed after a Saints player tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week but Giovagnoli told dundalkfc.com that it would allow his side ample time to prepare for Tuesday night’s game against Cork City at Turner’s Cross.

“It’s fine,” was his reply when asked his thoughts on the game falling by the wayside. “It means we’re going to have more time to prepare for the Cork game and more time to work. I am always happy when we have more time to work and time to try and implement our style.”

Dundalk are now facing a gruelling schedule of six games in the space of just 16 days but Giovagnoli said his players should embrace the challenge.

“We have to enjoy the busy schedule because this is what we worked so hard to have,” he said. “We have to be happy because it’s a privilege to be in this position and have these games and this challenge.”

Friday’s postponement also gives players like Sean Gannon more time to recover from injury and Giovagnoli is hopeful of having a full deck to choose from at Turner’s Cross on Tuesday night.

“We are close to having the full squad back,” said the Italian. “Scientifically, we have worked to have the whole squad available for this period. That is why there was a massive turnover in the league games against Shamrock Rovers and Finn Harps.”
