U16 Girls – Dundalk FC 2-0 Clonee United
Dundalk FC defeated Clonee United 2-0 in the MGL in a tough match at Oriel Park on Sunday morning.
The young Lilywhites started the game brightly and were unlucky not to take the lead on the fifth minute when a corner kick was floated into the area but the girls couldn’t capitalise.
After some relentless pressure the breakthrough came after 25 mins, Beth Hughes took a beautiful corner kick, Clonee failed to clear the ball properly and it fell to Caoimhe Crichton who passed to Katie Brophy on the edge of the box and she hit an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. 1-0 to the home side and it remained like this for the duration of the first half.
The 2nd half started and Clonee grew into the game more, but Dundalk defence stood firm and were very determined to keep a clean sheet.
Sarah McHugh went close with a header from a corner and Kerri Clinton also had a chance but Clonee scrambled it clear. The young Lilywhites doubled the lead on the 65th minute, the ball was won in midfield by Kerri Clinton who played an inch perfect pass to Caoimhe Crichton who converted past the advancing keeper.
2-0 to Dundalk FC with minutes remaining Beth Hughes almost scored direct from a corner and Hannah Sheerin nearly scored with a superb effort from the edge of the box. The final whistle went and the young Lilywhites got their deserved victory.
This was a great team performance which leaves the girls top of the League heading into the Christmas break.
