Lilywhites and Hoops Finish Scoreless

Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers played out a scoreless draw in the SSE Airtricity League on Friday evening at Tallaght Stadium.

The hosts almost took the lead in the opening 90 seconds when a Trevor Clarke crossfield ball was laid off into the path of Orhan Vojic however his shot was tipped over by Gary Rogers.

Dundalk then controlled possession for much of the remainder of the first period.

We managed to create our first chance just before the 20 minute mark when Michael Duffy’s free-kick found the head of Sean Hoare but his header came crashing off the bar and the rebound fell to Dane Massey but Rovers scrambled it clear.

Duffy had a free-kick and a follow up blocked down by the Rovers defence before Daniel Kelly, a late replacement for John Mountney in the lineup, fired a rasping shot but it went centimetres wide of the right hand post with Alan Mannus beaten.

On the stroke of half-time, Dundalk almost took the lead when a fine move finished with an unorthodox one-two between Hoban and Duffy finished with the latter finding the striker with an excellent cross but his header was just over the bar when under pressure from Lee Grace.

The second half began like the first half finished with the Lilywhites controlling but didn’t create an awful lot until Kelly fired a shot from distance again but this time it went over the bar.

Trevor Clarke had Rovers best chance on the hour mark when he capitalised on a loose ball from Shields but his drive was well saved by Rogers.

There were a shortage of chances after that with neither side really threatening.

Dundalk had a late shout for a penalty turned down after Gannon was fouled in the box by Bolger however referee Paul McLaughlin waved the appeals away.

That was the final action and it ended goalless.
