Lilywhites Continue Winning Ways With UCD Victory
Dundalk FC extended their lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League to seven points with a comfortable 3-0 victory over UCD at Oriel Park on Monday night.
The Lilywhites, who still have a game in hand over second-placed Shamrock Rovers, took control with a Michael Duffy screamer in the third minute and had the game wrapped up by half time, after Patrick Hoban and Michael Duffy took it in turns to set each other up for a goal before half time.
The win extends Dundalk’s unbeaten run in the league to 18 games – dropping just four points in that time – and continues an unbeaten season at home for Vinny Perth’s men.
The head coach made five changes to the team that beat Derry City in the FAI Cup on Friday night – Brian Gartland, Andy Boyle, Dean Jarvis, John Mountney and Patrick McEleney all came into the side – and the Lilywhites took control of the game immediately.
Dundalk took the lead in the third minute when a neat layoff from Patrick Hoban found Michael Duffy. He danced past four UCD defenders and got himself in position 30 yards from goal before unleashing a piledriver which flew into the top right hand corner.
Daniel Kelly almost doubled the lead immediately when he cut in off the right but his shot was just wide of the post.
It was 2-0 just before the 20 minute mark when Hoban did excellently on the right hand side and got to the byline before crossing for the waiting Duffy who added his second from close range.
Hoban almost got on the scoresheet with the next attack however his header, from Dean Jarvis’ cross, was excellently saved by Sheridan in the UCD goal.
Jason McClelland broke the Dundalk dominance with a shot but it was never troubling Gary Rogers.
Hoban and Daniel Kelly combined brilliantly but the number 9 couldn’t get his shot on target with Sheridan beaten.
Patrick McEleney tried a delightful chip however it just cleared the crossbar however Hoban would get the goal that his play deserved just before half-time.
Duffy this time turned provider for the striker and from the right wing his cross was put away brilliantly by Hoban.
It was 3-0 at the break and almost straight away after the second half began, Hoban had a header saved by Sheridan while Liam Kerrigan then had a go for UCD when it opened up from 30 yards for him but his shot on the angle was just wide.
