Lilywhites Defeated By Longford In Final Friendly

Match Report
// 4 Feb 2020

A late Dylan Grimes strike saw Longford Town take the win in our final pre-season friendly at Oriel Park.

It was a scrappy opening with both sides struggling to gain any sort of foothold in the game but it was Dundalk who had the best opportunity with Chris Shields and Greg Sloggett combing and the former shooting straight at the goalkeeper.

Niall Barnes responded for Longford with a shot which was blocked by Andy Boyle while at the other Georgie Kelly missed a gilt-edged chance to give us the lead.

Kelly again had a chance and was through on goal when Patrick McEleney played him in brilliantly but his effort was saved by Lee Steacy.

Kelly tried again a few minutes later and found space just outside the box however his shot was inches wide of the post.

The Lilywhites did have the ball in the net when Josh Gatt and Sean Gannon combined to set up Smith and his shot was good and past Steacy but he was deemed to have controlled with his hand and it was ruled out.

Georgie had a chance immediately after the break when Michael Duffy crossed from the left to the striker but he was stopped by Luke Dennison excellently at close range.

Joe Gorman responded for Longford with a thunderous shot but he hit the crossbar with Rogers beaten all ends up.

Duffy had a chance of his own when he trapped the ball and caught out 3 visiting defenders but his effort was easily cleared.

After Gatt went off injured, Duffy took the free-kick and forced an excellent save from Dennison to push his stinging shot around the post.

His fellow Derry man McEleney had a go next from the dead ball but curled just wide.

Young players Mark Wynne and Val Adedokun combined with the former firing goalwards after Val’s cross however the shot was blocked by Sloggett on its way to the net.

Dylan Grimes would get the first goal in the final minute of the 90 when Dennison’s long punt was latched onto by the substitute and he rounded Sava and calmly slotted home.

That was the final action of note as referee Paul McLaughlin called time and concludes our pre-season schedule with Shamrock Rovers in the Presidents Cup up next on Sunday.
