Lilywhites Fight Back To Rescue Draw

Match Report
// 14 Aug 2020

Dundalk rescued a draw on Friday night in a 2-2 draw against Waterford at Oriel Park.

Matthew Smith and Kurtis Byrne looked like they had earned Waterford all three points however goals in the last ten minutes from Patrick Hoban and Daniel Cleary secured the Lilywhites a point.

It was a cagey opening with both sides feeling each other out but a clever ball behind by Sean Gannon found Michael Duffy and he laid it off to Patrick Hoban but his curling effort was just wide of the post.

Chris Shields then had a rasping effort pushed away by Brian Murphy but then against the run of play, Waterford took the lead.

Matthew Smith got in behind and took it past three defenders before firing under Gary Rogers.

Sean Hoare had a chance go just over the bar from close range while Daniel Cleary’s glancing header looked destined for the net however Murphy got down to save.

Murphy acted as a sweeper when it looked like Duffy was going to be through on goal however he injured himself in the process and was replaced just before the break by Tadgh Ryan.

The second half began with a triple change by Dundalk but things were to get worse when Kurtis Byrne volleyed to the net and the ball went in off the post from the edge of the area.

Daniel Cleary almost responded immediately with a header from a Sean Murray corner however it went just wide.

There was little chances of note with neither side putting anything of note together.

Sean Murray fired over from outside the area and David McMillan got his head on the end of a brilliant Joshua Gatt cross however it went wide.

The Lilywhites pulled one back with just under 10 minutes remaining when Sean Murray’s cross was powered to the net by Hoban giving Ryan no chance.

It was almost 2-2 moments later when Gatt’s cross found the head of Hoban but as he was falling back, he couldn’t guide the ball to the net and it was inches away.

Remarkably, it was 2-2 in the final minute when Murray’s corner found Cleary and he got his head on it and the ball crept over the line.

That set up a frantic finish with Cleary hitting the crossbar from another Murray corner with the follow up being saved by Ryan from Gannon.

The Lilywhites caused a number of scrambles however couldn’t get the winner and had to settle for a point.
