Lilywhites Held At Home

Dundalk and Derry City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Oriel Park on Friday evening.

Patrick Hoban had given the champions a 2-0 lead with a brace however Darren Cole and Eoghan Stokes fired home from the penalty spot for the Candystripes to peg Dundalk back, who had Hoban dismissed for two yellows.

It wasn’t until the 17th minute until we had our first chance of the game and it was David Parkhouse who had an effort from distance but it flew well wide of the target.

Michael Duffy then had a free-kick go high and wide before fellow winger Daniel Kelly broke through the middle but fired wide also.

Peter Cherrie was called into action when he was closed down by Patrick Hoban and he squared it to the waiting Duffy but the goalkeeper did well to keep the ball out.

Duffy had another effort just on the stroke of half-time as he rose highest to head towards Cherrie but he was equal to it.

The Lilywhites took the lead just after the break when Hoban was played in brilliantly by Jordan Flores and the Galway man showed a cool head to fire the ball low to the net past Cherrie.

Daniel Cleary was next when he had a header flash wide from another Flores cross but it would be 2-0 moments later when Sean Gannon played in a superb cross for Hoban who nodded home at the back post.

It was almost a hat-trick for Hoban who glanced Duffy’s corner but it went wide.

Junior shot into the Derry City wall with a free-kick before Darren Cole pulled one back for the visitors with 26 minutes left to play.

The Lilywhites were then reduced to ten men and Derry awarded a penalty when Hoban was shown the red card after an incident in the box.

Substitute Eoghan Stokes sent Rogers the wrong way to level it 2-2.

Dundalk responded well to the setback when Sean Hoare tried from distance but Cherrie fumbled.

The final chance of the night fell to John Mountntey who shot but it was blocked in the dying minutes.

That proved to be the final action and the Lilywhites were held.
