Lilywhites Keep Up Good Form With Away Win

Dundalk maintained their two point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table with a 3-0 win over Limerick on Tuesday night.

First half goals from John Mountney and Patrick Hoban were added to by Michael Duffy just after half-time to secure all three points.

Dundalk made a bright start when Jamie McGrath played a wonderful reverse through ball to Michael Duffy and he jinked inside before shooting straight at Clarke.

The Lilywhites took the lead after eight minutes in a classic counter attack. A Limerick corner broke to Duffy who ran at pace at the home defence and his superb cross found the head of John Mountney at the back post who headed past Clarke to net his second goal in two games.

That appeared to settle the visitors further and they had two more chances from set pieces both from Duffy deliveries as free-kick on the right found the head of Sean Hoare however the goalkeeper saved easily and the second time a similar position saw his cross cleared only as far as McGrath who caught it on the volley but Clarke was equal to it once more.

Dundalk kept pressing and just on the half hour mark they made it 2-0.

Some superb footwork from Benson saw him create space for himself in the box and his cross was stood up perfectly for the waiting Patrick Hoban to head home his 7th goal of the season.

Dundalk controlled things until the break but never threatened to extend their lead.

Limerick came out in the second half with a fresh impetus and Connor Ellis shot straight at Rogers from the edge of the box while straight at the other end Duffy got his head on the end of a Sean Gannon cross but there was no power in it and it went straight through to Clarke.

Duffy would get the goal his performance deserved as he finished off from McGrath’s through ball after Shields won it back and he fired low with his left foot to give Clarke no chance.

Ellis then had a shot blocked superbly by Rogers as he was through on goal before Benson hit a free-kick straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.

Mountney had an opportunity to make it 4-0 and add his second however his shot from 20 yards was just kept out by Clarke.

That proved to be the final action of note as the Lilywhites went home with all three points and won their sixth league match on the bounce.
