Lilywhites Lose To Rovers

Match Report
// 27 Sep 2020

Filippo Giovagnoli has suffered his defeat as Dundalk Head Coach on Sunday night as the Lilywhites suffered a 4-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers.

A brace from Jack Byrne was added to by Liam Scales and Aaron McEneff as the hoops ran out winners.

It was a lively start to the game with both sides starting well. Dundalk had made ten changes from the side which won in Moldova on Thursday evening and they almost took the lead when Jordan Flores had a free-kick but his effort from the edge of the area was blocked by the wall.

Aaron Greene and Graham Burke had chances which just went wide for Rovers before former Lilywhite Ronan Finn forced a good stop from Aaron McCarey who managed to tip the ball around the post.

The Lilywhites almost took the lead on the half hour mark. A stunning show of pace from Nathan Oduwa got him away from Finn. He was able to pull the ball back to David McMillan but his effort was well saved by Alan Mannus.

Rovers took the lead shortly after that when Jack Byrne poked home from close range after he started the move himself and a goalmouth scramble ensued.

Finn blazed over from just outside the area but it was 2-0 just before the half-time break.

Scales got his head to Byrne’s corner and he directed it into the top corner of Aaron McCarey’s net.

It would be 3-0 moments after that when Will Patching fouled Scales in the area and referee Robert Harvey pointed to the spot.

Aaron McEneff made it 3-0 from 12 yards.

The Lilywhites were more in control of possession in the second half when Josh Gatt and John Mountney tried from distance but fired well wide when in space.

The game was being played at a pedestrian pace however Rovers made it 4-0 with 5 minutes left on the watch when Byrne rounded McCarey and finished to the net from an acute angle.

Oduwa had two quickfire chances to pull goals back however his shots from the same distance were both at Mannus and went wide.

That was the final action of note for either side and Rovers took the win, seeing us lose at Oriel for the first time in competitive action since August 2018.
