Lilywhites Suffer First Defeat Of The Season

Dundalk suffered their first defeat of the season on Friday night at Richmond Park as they went down 1-0 to St. Patrick’s Athletic.

Daniel Cleary’s own goal in the first half was the difference between the sides.

It was a scrappy opening to the game as both sides felt each other out.

Conor Clifford was the first to have a go when he fired towards goal however it was well blocked down by Daniel Cleary while at the other end almost straight away, Daniel Kelly broke free but when through on goal he fired well wide.

Michael Duffy unleashed from the edge of the area to force Brendan Clarke into a good save down to his right just on the 20 minute mark.

Rhys McCabe forced Gary Rogers into his first save of the evening when he shot from just outside the area but it was tipped away by the goalkeeper.

Duffy had an effort from just outside the area from a free-kick but it cleared the crossbar while for Pat’s, Clifford tried an acrobatic overhead kick however it was nowhere near the target.

Pat’s did take the lead on the stroke of half-time when McCabe’s cross on the left was turned into his own net by Cleary.

The rain started to pour in the second half and neither side were able to impose themselves on the game.

Pat’s created the first clear cut chance of the second 45 when Chris Forrester got free 20 yards from goal but Rogers was equal to it.

It was Duffy who got a header from Dane Massey’s cross but it was well wide of the target.

Sean Murray was next to have a go and his volley went inches wide while substitute Georgie Kelly had a volley go just wide also from Hoban’s header down.

Kelly again had a chance but his header was just into the arms of Clarke in stoppage time after Flores’ superb cross.

It looked like the Lilywhites had grabbed an equaliser at the death when Kelly’s flick on sent Hoban through but from a narrow angle he fired wide.
