McCarey Joins The Lilywhites
Dundalk FC is delighted to announce that Aaron McCarey has joined the Club.
McCarey joins us from Warrenpoint Town where he has been since September and has been an ever present in the Irish Premiership’s team. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper spent 5 years at Molineux lining out on 7 occasions for Wolves and he had loan spells with AFC Telford, Walsall, York City, Portsmouth and Bury. His contract expired in the summer of 2016 and he moved north to Ross County in the Scottish Premiership before returning to Ireland. McCarey is making his return to league of Ireland having embarked on his senior career with Monaghan United in the first division in 2009 and those performances earned him a move to England.
The 26 year-old has also represented Ireland at every age group up to under-21 and has a total of 24 caps. The Monaghan native was called into the senior international squad last March for a friendly against Turkey.
Speaking to dundalkfc.com after signing a two-year deal about the move, the Mongahan native was pleased to get the deal over the line.
“I am delighted to get the deal done. It has been in the making for a while the deal so it is great to get it over the line. It’s an absolute privilege to join the best team in Ireland.
“I am looking forward to joining the best team in Ireland and with the new season coming up it’s going to be very exciting. “
McCarey is already familiar with players within the squad and while there has been some change at the Club, it was a ‘no brainer’ for him to join the Club.
“There will be some changes with Stephen (Kenny) leaving for the international setup. It will be interesting here with a new manager and new players, me being one of them, and I have spoken to some of the players before.
“There are some familiar faces in the squad for me so it will make things easy for me to transition in.
“It was a no brainer for me to come here, I have heard nothing but good things about the Club from everyone and it is like a family. “
The former Monaghan United netminder has been keeping track of the Lilywhites during his time away and he admitted that it is a great environment to be entering and feels that the Club match his ambition in the game.
“I have been keeping an eye on things while I have been away and I always did when I was away. I kept an eye on the Irish teams are doing. I knew about the place. I have seen the progress that they have made in the last couple of years.
“The last three or four years the side have gone from strength to strength. They had the magnificent European run a couple of years ago so there’s so many positives and I am delighted to be here.
“It’s a great environment to come into. Coming into a ‘Double’ winning team. There’s a winning mentality at the Club.
“The Club’s ambition matches my ambition which was key. The move furthers my career and to play in European is something I am looking forward to.
“When I first became aware of Dundalk’s interest it was an easy decision and hopefully we can be successful. “
Vinny Perth, who was instrumental in bringing Aaron to the Club, added “We welcome Aaron into the very competitive goalkeeping team. We have a very close knit group of goalkeepers and Aaron will play a vital role in that. He joins Gary Rogers and Ross Treacy. He brings great experience. He is young in goalkeeping terms but he has great experience from his time in the UK, particularly in the SPL with Ross County. He will be a great asset to the goalkeeping department. He is a goalkeeper with superb ability and the future is bright for him.
