McMillan Ready For Inter Clash

First Team News
// 16 Sep 2020

Dundalk continue their 2020 European campaign with a tie against Inter Club d’Escaldes of Andorra on Thursday evening.

Preparation has been good with the team travelling yesterday and training at a local ground before training at the Estadi Comunal on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to dundalkfc.com ahead of the tie was striker David McMillan and he reflected on what was a ‘good win’ for the Lilywhites against Shelbourne at Oriel Park..

“It was a good win for us on Friday night, we probably did make life a little more difficult for ourselves than we needed to and the penalty didn’t help.

“All in all though it was a good night for us going into the European game now. We haven’t had the best league form over the past few weeks so that will give us confidence. “

The victory in the league was the first for Dundalk since the resumption and it made it two competitive wins from two for interim Head Coach Filippo Giovagnoli.

McMillan feels that the extra week on the training ground due to the Derry City postponement was worthwhile and allowed the players to understand the coach’s philosophy.

“The Cobh game came quickly but it has been a positive few weeks. We had a couple of weeks where Filippo and Giuseppe have been able to get their point across and how they want to play.

“That extra time has helped us get used to things, to get it drilled into it and I think that you could see, especially in the first half, how they want us to play.

“We have areas we need to improve on and we want to keep clean sheets, that’s the next step and we are happy to be back winning again.”

Attention turns to Europe once again and the Dublin native was famous in his first spell for netting goals in the 2016 campaign. That is something he is intent on doing once more and is looking to avenge the defeat to Slovenian champions Celje a month ago.

“It has been a strange few weeks for me, not what I expected when I re-signed but we have a huge game tomorrow evening in the Europa League.

“We have been working towards that for the past few weeks, everyone is looking forward to it. After losing against Celje we want another crack at it.

“We want to rectify things and if we win it gives is another game so the incentive is there. We have to approach it properly and make sure that we go out and do everything to get the win.”
