Dundalk were defeated by Austrian Bundesliga outfit LASK Linz on Tuesday in a pre-season friendly in Spain. Goals in the first half put Linkz 2-0 up at the break and while Dundalk dominated most of the second period, Linz scored again to finish off the scoring at 3-0.

However speaking to dundalkfc.com after the defeat, Head Coach Vinny Perth was ‘extremely happy’ with the performance of the Lilywhites and was pleased with getting 3 of our key men back in action.

“I am extremely happy with our performance. We played a side who are 18 games into their season and they are extremely fit .

“We got Robbie Benson, Patrick Hoban and Brian Gartland back on the pitch for first time since the FAI Cup final . It is the highest level we have played in a pre-season in my 6 years in club . “

Perth was particularly pleased with how the side were more than a match for the Austrians and feels it was the best work out by a distance in this pre-season.

“After 3 weeks to match a team of that standard for long periods is a massive confidence but we need to get to their level soon .

“The management team and squad have got more out today than any other session we have had so far . “

The scoreline finished 3-0 to Linz but the Dublin native didn’t believe the result reflected the overall match.

“We picked this level of opposition to test us and they did . The third goal might flatter them a bit.

“There is disappointment in the result but the massive gains for the group going forward.”

Goals from Victor and Klauss put Linz 2-0 up at the break and Jamnig found the net for a third in the closing stages however the Lilywhites put in a good performance following on from their 5-1 win over Drogheda United on Friday.

The training camp in Spain continues this week and finishes off with a second friendly clash against Swedish side IK Brommapojkarna on Friday afternoon.
