Reserves: Sligo Rovers 3-0 Dundalk
Early goals from Kieran Brick and Darragh Healy helped Sligo Rovers to a 3-0 win over Dundalk in the 2011 Newstalk A-Championship on Saturday afternoon, as the Lilywhites fell to their first defeat of the season. With FAI Cup final hero Ciarán Kelly in goal, the Bit O’ Red made sure of their opening win of the campaign 16 minutes from time when Mark McGoldrick found the net, to complete a disappointing day for the visitors.
Sligo boss Paul Cook was in the crowd to cast an eye on potential Rovers stars for his first-team squad. It didn’t take Rovers long to go in front when, after just eight minutes, midfielder Brick won possession and scored with a great strike from just outside the box. Just past the quarter-hour mark, there was a mix-up in the Dundalk box which saw ‘keeper Alex Reilly come off his line only to miss the ball, which then fell to Barry O’Mahony. His shot was headed off the line, but the clearance only went as far as Healy who curled the ball around the Dundalk defenders on the goal line and into the top-right hand corner.
Three minutes later, Kevin Devaney played a long ball out of the Rovers area which put McGoldrick through on goal but the striker’s shot was straight at Reilly. Dundalk had a strong penalty shout on 26 minutes when Paul Devins brought down Michael Osobe but the referee waved away the players’ protests and booked Dundalk’s striker. The best save of the game came in the 44th minute when Conor Davey crossed the ball into the Dundalk box and eventually it came to Kevin Devaney whose shot forced a great one-handed stop from Reilly.
Rovers completed their scoring and wrapped up all three points in the 74th minute when O’Mahony and McGoldrick combined with a one-two which put the latter through, and he made no mistake with his effort. Dundalk will now look to bounce back with two home games on the bounce, against Derry City on Saturday 7 May (kick-off 1pm) and UCD on Sunday 15 May (kick-off 2pm).
