Shields Goal Seals Crucial Victory

Dundalk moved nine points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League on Friday evening with a 1-0 win over nearest challengers Cork City at Turner’s Cross!

Chris Shields third minute goal was the match winning moment as he put in a man of the match display to secure the victory.

Dundalk got off to the perfect start when Chris Shields roamed forward and played an unorthodox one-two with Patrick Hoban. Shields continued his run and the ball fell to him and his first time shot found its way to the bottom left corner.

It was all Dundalk in the opening period and Dane Massey almost made it 2-0 soon after when he raided in behind but his shot was wild and went off target.

Hoban then got in the way of a John Mountney shot and it broke to the striker but his shot was blocked by a home body.

Duffy’s cross on the left caused panic before Cork City had their first effort of the game when Gearoid Morrissey shot on the turn but it was easily gathered by Gary Rogers.

Cork got into the game a little more but the best that they conjured up was a free-kick from Kieran Sadlier but again it was easy for Rogers.

Garry Buckley had a shot charged down by Sean Hoare before the Lilywhites came so close to making it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when Duffy did excellently to get in behind the defence but Hoban couldn’t get enough to direct it to the net past McNulty.

Immediately after the break it could have been 2-0 when Hoban laid it off brilliantly to Mountney but his driven effort pulled wide.

Shields did his best to add to his tally when he found space 30 yards from the goal but the ball went inches over the bar.

Mountney got in behind after a superb link up with Gannon and Hoban but he just couldn’t get in ahead of McNulty despite his efforts to fumble.

Hoban was quickest to react to Massey’s throw-in but McLoughlin did well to get across and block.

Duffy took the resulting corner and found Brian Gartland but his header went well over the bar.

Hoban tried some impressive acrobatics on Gannon’s cross but he cleared the stand behind the goal with his effort.

The Lilywhites saw out the game comfortably after that and referee Neil Doyle blew the full-time whistle to seal a deserved victory on Leeside.
