SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division – Round 18
📅 Friday, June 13th, 2025 | 🏟 Oriel Park
Points Shared in Frustrating Night at Oriel Park
Dundalk FC were held to a frustrating 1–1 draw by UCD on Friday night, a result that dented their hopes of pulling further clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division. While the unbeaten run now stretches to 18 games, this will feel like two points dropped.
First Half: Groome Screamer, Verdon Response
Dundalk were slow to get going and nearly fell behind when UCD forward Andy Wells looped a header over the bar from close range after a poorly cleared corner.
Moments later, full-back Luke Mulligan making his first start of the season, showed attacking intent with a surging run and shot that was comfortably held by the UCD keeper.
It was Harry Groome who broke the deadlock on 26 minutes. After good work from Leo Gaxha, Seán Keogh fired in a low cross that broke kindly to Groome who strook from the edge of the box.
But UCD hit back eight minutes later when Adam Verdon curled a free-kick over the wall and into the bottom corner. Enda Minogue seemed to have it covered, but misjudged the flight, perhaps unsighted by the sun and the Students were level.

Second Half: Chances Missed
Dundalk pushed for a winner after the break. Dean Ebbe went close with a flicked effort from a Gaxha cross, while Mulligan almost made it 2–1 late on but saw his shot sail over the bar.
Substitutes Andy Paraschiv, Shane Tracey were introduced to inject energy, but UCD held firm and even threatened a late winner through Verdon, whose long-range strike whistled just past the post.
It was a game lacking intensity at times, and head coach Ciarán Kilduff admitted afterwards that his side didn’t meet the standards they’ve set this season.

Kilduff’s Thoughts
Speaking post-match, Ciarán Kilduff reflected on a frustrating night for his side:
“We huffed and puffed without really showing the intensity we’ve been known for. We probably hoped the goal would come rather than making it happen.”
The manager also urged focus and hunger from his young squad as the promotion race heats up:
“We’ve worked hard to get where we are. But if we want to stay top, we can’t drop our standards, even on an off night.”
