FAI Cup: Derry City 4-2 Dundalk FC

Dundalk's FAI Cup journey came to an end at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium as Derry City booked their place in the Club Orange FAI Cup semi-finals with a 4-2 victory on Sunday.

The Lilywhites made the stronger start and took the lead after just nine minutes. A Bobby Burns corner caused problems in the Derry defence and, when the ball broke kindly to Shane Tracey inside the area, he made no mistake, drilling a low finish past Tom Norcott from 12 yards.

However, Dundalk's advantage lasted only 14 minutes. Michael Duffy delivered an inviting cross into the box and Patrick McClean rose highest to head beyond Enda Minogue, bringing the hosts level.

Derry continued to press and completed the turnaround shortly before half-time. Brandon Fleming's cutback accidentally struck the hand of Ronan Teahan inside the penalty area, prompting referee Paul McLaughlin to harshly point to the spot. Duffy stepped up and confidently converted to put the Candystripes 2-1 ahead at the interval. This controversial moment proved to be the turning point.

Looking for a way back into the contest, Dundalk manager Ciarán Kilduff made a triple change early in the second half. The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but clear-cut opportunities remained limited.

Instead, Derry extended their lead with just over 20 minutes remaining. Kevin dos Santos, making his first appearance since mid-July after coming off the bench three minutes earlier, marked his return in style by scoring via a deflection.

With Dundalk committing more players forward, spaces opened up at the other end and Derry took full advantage. Duffy grabbed his second goal of the afternoon on 84 minutes, firing home Derry's fourth and effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.

The Lilywhites did manage a late reply when Leonard Gaxha found the net, but it proved no more than a consolation as Derry saw out the closing stages.
