Lilywhites Held To Stalemate At Ferrycarrig Park

Dundalk FC were forced to settle for a share of the spoils on Friday night as they played out a goalless draw with Wexford FC at Ferrycarrig Park.

Ciarán Kilduff’s men dominated large spells and carved out the game’s best chances, but were denied time and again by an inspired Paul Martin in the Wexford goal.

The result keeps Dundalk six points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division with six games left to play, after second-placed Cobh Ramblers also dropped points in a 1–1 draw with Kerry FC.

First Half: Dundalk On Top But Frustrated

The home side threatened inside three minutes when Mikie Rowe’s cross was met by Ben McCormack, but veteran goalkeeper Peter Cherrie, restored to the starting XI, got down smartly to save.

That scare sparked Dundalk into life. On seven minutes, Harry Groome burst forward from the left and teed up Dean Ebbe, whose effort deflected off Dean Larkin and was clawed around the post by Martin.

Gbemi Arubi was next to go close, racing clear before flashing a shot across goal that evaded both Martin and the onrushing Ebbe by inches.

As the half wore on, Dundalk grew increasingly dominant. Norman Garbett tested the Wexford defense with a curling strike over the bar, while Daryl Horgan’s deliveries caused problems from set pieces, but the breakthrough wouldn’t come before the interval.

Dundalk picked up where they left off after the restart. JR Wilson’s deep cross almost crept in before Martin palmed it behind, and moments later Groome slipped Ebbe through one on one, only for the Wexford keeper to spread himself and make a crucial stop.

The hosts reminded Dundalk of their threat just past the hour mark when Rowe found space at the back post, but Cherrie stood tall to keep his strike out with his feet.

The Lilywhites continued to press for the winner. Arubi drove an effort wide, Groome saw two more shots denied by Martin, and substitute Keith Ward’s late free kick was headed over by Mayowa Animasahun as the clock ticked down.

Despite piling on the pressure in stoppage time, Dundalk couldn’t find a way through a resilient Wexford backline.
