Derry City U17 4-1 Dundalk FC U17

EA Sports U17 National Underage League Group A

Dundalk U17s endured a difficult Sunday afternoon as they were beaten 4-1 by Derry City in their final EA Sports National Underage League Group A game in the Brandywell.

With a number of players absent for Darren McGarry’s side, Luke Povall of the U15s was drafted in to take a spot on a four man bench for the Lilywhites.

The visitors got off to a slow start and Derry took full advantage, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes.

Dundalk grew into the game as the half progressed, and they pulled a goal back before half time, with Thomas Quinn providing the finishing touch to make it 2-1 at the interval.

Momentum switched once more at the start of the second half, as Derry took advantage of their good start to score their third goal of the afternoon.

McGarry’s side continued to play, and created some promising chances, but the game was all but over a few minutes later when the Candystripes were awarded a controversial penalty, which they subsequently converted.

Derry saw the game out to take all three points, as both sides qualify for the League in phase two. There will be many challenging games for both sides as they enter phase two of the season, but it’ll be a challenge this Dundalk side will relish.
