Dundalk FC Appoints Tom Mohan as Academy Director

Dundalk FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Tom Mohan as the Club’s new Academy Director.

One of the most respected figures in Irish football development, Mohan brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach, having enjoyed a distinguished career in the League of Ireland before going on to work extensively with the Football Association of Ireland’s underage international teams.

As Academy Director, Mohan will oversee all aspects of player development within Dundalk FC’s Academy, supporting coaches across all age groups and helping to strengthen the pathway from underage football through to the Club’s senior teams. He will also work closely with the Club’s growing girls’ and women’s programme as Dundalk continues to develop opportunities for female players within the Academy structure.

Speaking about his appointment, Mohan said:

“I’m really looking forward to getting started. There is already a huge amount of good work being done throughout the Academy and I’ve been very impressed by what I’ve seen.

“My role is to support that work, help the coaches, and make sure we continue to provide the best possible environment for young players to develop. We want to give players every opportunity to improve and fulfil their potential.

“Player development is the most important thing. At a young age, players need strong technical foundations, good coaching and the right environment to learn and improve. Athletic development and game understanding are important too, but they also need resilience, character and a real desire to get better every day.

“Football development is never a straight line. There will always be challenges and setbacks, but players who are committed, who work hard and who are willing to learn give themselves the best chance of succeeding.

“The aim is to help young people become the best players and the best versions of themselves that they can be.”

Mohan believes the Academy’s connection to the Club’s senior teams is one of its greatest strengths.

“Dundalk has shown over many years that young players will be given an opportunity if they are good enough. There is a clear pathway here and that is hugely important.

“Ciaran has already given opportunities to a lot of young players and that speaks to the strong connection between the Academy and the first team. Those opportunities are made easier by the environment that has been created within the senior squad, where experienced players help young players settle in, learn and continue their development.

“For Academy players, seeing graduates progress into the first team gives them something real to aim for. It is also a reward for the work being done by coaches across the Academy. Ultimately, we want to continue producing players who can make an impact at senior level, represent their country and enjoy successful careers in the game.”

Having closely followed the progress of Dundalk’s underage teams, Mohan also paid tribute to the work already being carried out throughout the Academy.

“The achievements of the teams this season are a credit to everyone involved. The coaches put in a massive amount of work in player identification, development and supporting players throughout the year.

“It’s great to see teams competing at the highest levels, but it’s equally important to see players progressing and enjoying their football. The continued growth of the girls’ game at the Club is also extremely positive and there is a lot to look forward to in the years ahead.”

“We have seen in recent weeks the importance of Academy development in order to bring sustainable structures to the club. It’s a model that is used successfully around the world and it’s very important for the future of our club that we have Tom here.

“It’s great that such a highly rated coach as Tom has decided to dedicate the next phase of his career to Dundalk Football Club.”

This role is funded through the League of Ireland Academy Investment Programme, supported by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport and Sport Ireland.
