Dundalk Hold Firm at Pats


Dundalk secured a battling point away to title-chasing St Patrick's Athletic, drawing 1-1 at Richmond Park in a performance that showed real character after a difficult run of results. The result ends a three-game losing streak in the league against a Pat's team that had won 10 of their previous 13 league games on home soil.


After Trevor Clarke had hit the post, the Lilywhites made the breakthrough with Daryl Horgan blasting home from the spot in the 34th minute after a Anto Breslin challenge on Trevor Clarke, referee Kevin O'Sullivan pointing straight to the spot. It was Horgan's seventh league goal of the campaign and gave Dundalk a deserved lead at the break after they had grown steadily into the contest following an early Pat's flurry.



Goalkeeper Enda Minogue was outstanding throughout, producing a string of key saves to keep the home side at bay, including a brilliant one-handed stop to deny Kian Leavy shortly after the restart and a smothering save from a dangerous Luke Turner header late on.


Dundalk had to reshuffle at half-time with Aodh Dervin and Rob Cornwall on yellow cards, with Egor Vassenin and Keith Buckley coming on to make his mark, while further changes from the bench in Shane Tracey, Declan McDaid and Leo Gaxha all added fresh legs and energy as the game wore on. St Pat's did level through Sean Hoare's header just after the hour mark, but Dundalk continued to show plenty of threat of their own going forward.


With Mayowa Animashaun outstanding, Dundalk produced a resilient, well-organised display that will give the squad plenty of confidence heading into the next round of fixtures.
