Galway United 0-1 Dundalk FC: Report

Tyreke Wilson’s stoppage-time strike earned Dundalk a deserved 1–0 victory over Galway United in an unusual Premier Division clash played at Turner’s Cross in Cork.

Ciarán Kilduff’s side started the stronger and quickly asserted control, feeling aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty inside seven minutes when Daryl Horgan went down under Arthur Parker’s challenge. Dundalk continued to press, with Horgan and Eoin Kenny combining to good effect as the latter forced a save from Evan Watts before Horgan dragged a rebound wide. Dundalk created the better openings throughout the early stages, with Danny Mullen going close on a number of occasions.

Galway showed flashes of danger, most notably when David Hurley delivered a teasing cross that just evaded Stephen Walsh. Ed McCarthy also tested Enda Minogue, but the Dundalk goalkeeper was rarely troubled. The first half remained open and competitive, with both teams creating chances, yet neither could break the deadlock before the interval.

Dundalk resumed after the break with renewed intent and again took control of the contest, pinning Galway back for long spells. Horgan remained a constant threat down the left flank, while Mullen continued to find himself in promising positions but lacked the finishing touch, sending another header wide and seeing an effort turned behind by Watts. Galway goalkeeper Evan Watts proved one of his side’s standout performers, repeatedly denying Dundalk and keeping the contest alive.

As the match edged towards its conclusion, Dundalk increased the pressure further, sensing a late opportunity. Ronan Teahan came agonisingly close on 90 minutes when his header from a JR Wilson cross struck the post. However, their persistence finally paid off moments later. Following a loose ball on the edge of the Galway penalty area after a Dundalk attack broke down, Tyreke Wilson reacted quickest and fired a low left-footed effort through a crowded box and into the bottom corner to secure the breakthrough in the 91st minute.

The late goal was no more than Dundalk deserved after controlling long periods and creating the clearer chances.
