Report: Shamrock Rovers 3-2 Dundalk FC

Dundalk produced one of their most spirited displays of the season but were ultimately left empty-handed as league leaders Shamrock Rovers edged a breathless 3-2 contest at Tallaght Stadium.

The Lilywhites twice fought back from behind and created enough chances to take something from the game, only for a costly defensive lapse late in the first half to prove decisive.

The evening could hardly have started worse for Ciarán Kilduff's side. After just two minutes, Enda Minogue was penalised for bringing down Michael Noonan in the area and Dylan Watts made no mistake from the spot to hand Rovers an early lead.

Rather than allow the setback to knock them off course, Dundalk responded impressively. Daryl Horgan was at the heart of much of the visitors' attacking play and his set-piece delivery helped restore parity on 15 minutes. Max Kovalevskis conceded a corner and Horgan's dangerous ball into the box exposed hesitation in the Rovers defence, allowing Rob Cornwall to fire home from close range.

With confidence growing, Dundalk pushed for a second. A misplaced backpass from Cory O'Sullivan presented Ronan Teehan with a sight of goal, but Ed McGinty rescued his side with a vital stop before Cian Dillon sent the rebound over the crossbar.

Those missed chances proved costly as Rovers regained the lead five minutes later. Watts recovered delivered an inviting cross from the right and Noonan arrived at the back post to head beyond Minogue.

Again, Dundalk showed resilience. Horgan, Dillon and Teehan continually caused problems for a Rovers side that looked vulnerable whenever pressed, and the equaliser arrived on 27 minutes. Watts surrendered possession near his own penalty area and Dillon battled his way onto the loose ball before being bundled over by Lee Grace. Horgan confidently dispatched the penalty, driving his effort high into the net for his ninth goal of the campaign.

At 2-2, Dundalk looked capable of taking control against a much-changed Rovers side struggling for fluency, but the decisive moment arrived seven minutes before the break.

A routine attack appeared manageable until Bobby Burns' attempted clearance ricocheted dangerously across his own area. Jonathan Afolabi reacted quickest, taking advantage of the uncertainty before finishing clinically to restore Rovers' advantage for a third time.

The first half's frantic pace inevitably cooled after the interval, but Dundalk remained a threat throughout. Kilduff was forced into changes early in the second period, introducing Harry Groome and Declan McDaid, while later Leo Gaxha added fresh energy in attack.

Trevor Clarke, returning to Tallaght, came close to levelling matters when his effort drew an outstanding save from McGinty. At the other end, Minogue also produced a series of impressive saves to keep Dundalk within touching distance, twice denying substitute Maleace Asamoah.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Dundalk pushed hard for a late equaliser. Gaxha's low strike forced McGinty into another smart save and the Rovers goalkeeper ultimately proved the difference as the league leaders held out.
