WDL Final: Dundalk FC 0-1 Wexford FC

A late goal from Mia Whelan settled a thrilling WDL Cup Final as Wexford secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Oriel Park on Wednesday night.

While the visitors ultimately lifted the trophy courtesy of Whelan's 88th-minute strike, Dundalk can take enormous pride from one of their strongest and most disciplined performances of the season against a highly talented Wexford side featuring a number of players with SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division experience.

Wexford controlled much of the possession throughout the opening half, but Dundalk's defensive organisation and work ethic ensured clear-cut chances were limited. Captain Aoife Fanning and Abigail Martin were outstanding throughout, making a series of timely interceptions and crucial defensive contributions.

The visitors threatened early when Whelan forced an excellent save from Eden Laughton Tyler after seven minutes. Dundalk responded well and came close to breaking the deadlock on 15 minutes when Sophie Hanlon's intelligent hold-up play created an opening for Siún Kirby, whose effort brought a fine save from Claudia Keenan.

Laughton Tyler continued to impress, confidently dealing with a Molly Kirwan free-kick from 25 yards before producing further saves to deny Daisy Fleming and Whelan as Wexford increased the pressure.

Dundalk remained a threat on the counterattack and nearly found an opener on 36 minutes when Kirby delivered an outstanding cross into the area that just eluded the advancing Hanlon.

A minute later, Laughton Tyler was again called into action, racing from her line to block Maia Stokes' effort at close range. Wexford continued to probe, with Aishling Roche firing narrowly over from distance before Whelan blasted over the crossbar just before the interval.

The Lilywhites emerged brightly after the restart. Makenzie Crowley went close with an ambitious strike from distance inside the opening minute of the second half, while Kirby soon tested Keenan with a powerful effort from 20 yards that required a full-stretch save. From the resulting corner, Fanning headed narrowly wide.

Wexford came within inches of taking the lead on 57 minutes when Kirwan's effort from a Freya De Mange corner crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, De Mange unleashed a superb long-range strike that Laughton Tyler somehow tipped over the bar with another outstanding save.

Despite Wexford's territorial advantage, Dundalk continued to frustrate their opponents with a disciplined defensive display and relentless work rate. Phil Cox's side showed impressive fitness and determination throughout, restricting the visitors to very few opportunities from open play.

As the game entered its final stages, Whelan again tested Laughton Tyler with a dipping long-range effort that the Dundalk goalkeeper brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar before gathering the rebound.

With extra-time appearing increasingly likely, Dundalk's resistance was finally broken two minutes from time. After Laughton Tyler, who deservedly won the player of the match award, produced yet another excellent save to deny Fleming, the rebound fell kindly for Whelan, who reacted quickest to drive the ball into the net and give Wexford the decisive breakthrough.

Dundalk pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, but Wexford held firm to secure victory.

Although the result was a heartbreaking one, Dundalk's players can reflect on a superb performance against top-class opposition. Their resilience, organisation and commitment throughout the contest earned deserved admiration from everyone in attendance and provided further evidence of the progress being made by this impressive young side.
